Everyone's asking: Will ChatGPT replace Google? Will it kill SEO? Is traditional search dead?

Here's my take after running SEO sprints for SaaS, building LinkDR, and launching AISEOTracker to track how AI tools actually mention brands.

Short answer:
No, ChatGPT won't kill SEO.
But it is rewriting the rules.

What's actually happening?

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini are doing two things at once:

  1. Answering questions directly
  2. Choosing which sources to cite and summarize

That second part?
It's the new SEO battleground.

We've moved from:

"Rank #1 on Google for a keyword"

To:

"Be the brand AI chooses to talk about when users ask questions"

SEO isn't "dead", it's evolving into AI visibility optimization.
If ChatGPT doesn't mention you, it doesn't matter if you're #1 on Google.

SEO is becoming narrative SEO

The new game:

  • Get cited by authoritative content
  • Be summarized well by AI
  • Shape the narrative AI creates about your niche

Old-school tactics (keyword stuffing, random backlinks) won't cut it.
AI reads deeper. It chooses what feels trustworthy, useful, and common across sources.

ChatGPT is changing the funnel

People are asking ChatGPT instead of Googling.

"Best tools for content repurposing"
"How to use AI for customer support"
"What's the best GPT-powered chatbot?"

These used to be Google queries. Now they go to ChatGPT,
meaning you won't show up unless you're part of the answer.

SEO is no longer just about being found.
It's about being remembered and re-told.

So what do you do?

Here's what I'm betting on (and building):

  1. Track your AI visibility
→ I built AISEOTracker to scan ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and show if your brand gets mentioned.

  2. Earn citations from real content
→ Not PBNs or spammy guest posts. Create assets worth quoting.

  3. Write with AI summarization in mind
→ Clear structure, entity names, helpful formatting. AI needs signal!

  4. Control your narrative
→ Define what you want AI to say about you, and seed that across your content, blog, and partnerships.

TL;DR: SEO is not dead. But it's not the same.

  • ChatGPT won't replace SEO.
  • But it is replacing some parts of the search journey.
  • The future of SEO is about showing up in AI answers, not just search results.

If you want to win, shift from:

"How do I rank on Google?"
to
"How do I get cited, summarized, and spoken about by AI?"

This is the new SEO frontier. And it's wide open.
