Best Prop Trading Firms in 2026: Payout Rules, Drawdowns & Tested Fees

TL;DR

For forex and CFDs, pick FTMO. For futures, pick Topstep, the only firm here that publishes its pass rate (16.8% of 2025 Combines). I checked every rule and price on the firms' own pages on 8 October 2026 and ran one fee test through all four. I didn't buy challenges.

The rating is mine. It weights payout reality 35%, rule fairness 30%, cost 20% and public disclosure 15%. The sub-scores are in How I rated them.

All four call the funded account simulated. You trade a demo balance, and the firm pays you a share of the simulated profit. Pick on payout rules, not on the "up to $2M" banner.

Disclosure: the Join links go through il.ly/go/ redirects to each firm's own site. None carries a referral code today. If I join an affiliate program, the link will, and I may earn a commission.

Pick by market and country

Forex, gold and index CFDs. FTMO's 2-Step has the simplest risk rules here, 5% daily and 10% static. FundedNext's Stellar 2-Step asks for less profit (8% then 5%) at a lower entry price, with more fine print.

Futures. Topstep if you want end-of-day trailing and published pass data. Apex if you want a 100% split and deep coupons, and accept that each funded account closes after six payouts.

Canada. All four take Canadian residents. Topstep pays Canadians through Wise in 1–3 business days with no Topstep fee (payout policy). Apex says Canadians "can fully utilize our services" but can't buy a live Tradovate account (restricted countries). FundedNext lists "Canada (except Ontario)" among countries its risk desk reviews case by case for live futures (futures countries).

United States. FTMO sells CFD challenges through FTMO US at ftmo.oanda.com, with higher prices ($619 for a $100K 2-Step, against €540 globally) and Revolut wire as the only payout method. FundedNext's US site runs on Match-Trader only. Topstep pays US traders instantly through Aeropay once a payout is approved. Apex pays by ACH to a US bank in your name.

What a 50K account really costs

This is the fee test. Same scenario at every firm: a 50K-size account, two failed attempts, a pass on the third, then funded. List prices on 8 October 2026; promo prices and my own arithmetic are marked.

Firm and planFirst attemptTwo more attemptsActivationTotal to fundedRefunded laterPayout fees
FTMO 2-Step $50K€345€690 (no reset discount published)€0€1,035€345 with the first rewardNo FTMO commission; 0.7% on profit in a foreign currency
Topstep 50K Standard$49$98 (two resets at $49)$149$296No$30 ACH or wire; no Topstep fee on Wise or Aeropay
FundedNext Stellar 2-Step $50K$299.99about $539.98 (resets about 10% off, my estimate)$0about $839.97Latest reset fee, with the first rewardUp to 3.5% processing fee
Apex 50K Intraday$249 ($19.92 with SAVENOW, my arithmetic)$498 (no resets; you rebuy)$99$846 list, $158.76 at 92% offNo refundsNone published

Three things the scenario shows:

  • Apex is cheapest to reach funded during a sale, and FTMO is the most expensive. FTMO gives the 2-Step fee back with your first reward, so a trader who gets paid recovers €345 of the €1,035.
  • Topstep's monthly price is a subscription. It rebills every 30 days until you pass or cancel, and a reset costs another month's price.
  • The real fee sits after funding. FundedNext takes up to 3.5% of each payout. FTMO's 2-Step keeps 20% of profit until you qualify for 90%. Apex caps what a 50K account can ever pay out at $14,500.

Payout speed compared

Apex5 qualifying days ($200+ on a 50K Intraday)Up to weeklyACH (US), Plane (international)"Most users receive payouts within 5–11 business days"$500 minimum; 6 payouts, then the account closes

The payout has two clocks. First the firm approves it, then a bank, card network or blockchain moves it. It's the same split I found in casino withdrawals. FundedNext publishes the fastest approval figure, a median of 4.74 hours on its reward page, but that is its own number and unaudited.

The bank side matters too. Apex pays international traders only to a bank in their declared country of residence, and US traders only by ACH to a US account in their own name (international payouts). US citizens abroad run into the same address checks I covered in keeping a US address abroad.

Trailing, end-of-day and static drawdowns

The drawdown type decides more challenges than the profit target. All three use a floor under your balance; touch it and the account is gone. What changes is when the floor moves.

Static floor stays at the starting balance; intraday trailing floor follows every new high including open profit; end-of-day trailing floor moves only at the daily close
  • Static (FTMO 2-Step, FundedNext CFD challenges): the floor stays at the starting balance minus the limit. A winning week gives you more room.
  • Intraday trailing (Apex Intraday): the floor follows every new high, including open profit. Apex's own help page says the threshold "adjusts upward immediately even if the position is not closed" (explained). A trade that runs up and comes back can end the account at break-even.
  • End-of-day trailing (Topstep, FTMO 1-Step and futures, FundedNext futures, Apex EOD): the floor moves once a day, from the closing balance. Intraday swings don't raise it. Every firm still checks the floor in real time, so a deep intraday dip still breaches.

Most trailing floors stop rising at some point. Topstep's locks at the starting balance. Apex's funded-account floor locks at the starting balance plus $100.

FTMO

FTMO sells 2-Step and 1-Step CFD challenges, plus FTMO Futures on a monthly plan. It has paid "$650 million in rewards" by its own count (trust FAQ) and bought the broker OANDA in December 2025.

FTMO rules

2-Step. 10% profit target in the Challenge, 5% in Verification, at least 4 trading days in each, no time limit. The daily loss limit is 5% of starting capital. FTMO measures it on equity, open trades included, against your balance at midnight Prague time. The maximum loss is 10% and static (trading objectives).

1-Step. One 10% target, a tighter 3% daily limit, and a 10% max loss that trails your highest midnight balance. A Best Day Rule caps your best day at 50% of the sum of profitable days. Breaking it doesn't fail you. You keep trading until the ratio drops.

Funded Standard account. You can't open or close trades on affected instruments 2 minutes either side of listed news releases, and you must close before the weekend (news FAQ). The Swing account type has neither restriction.

Futures. One phase with $3,000, $6,000 or $9,000 targets. The max drawdown trails end-of-day ($2,000 to $6,000 by size) and locks once it reaches the starting balance. You must be flat by 4:10 p.m. ET every day (futures table).

FTMO payout reality

You can ask for the first reward on day 14 after your first trade on the funded account. Review takes 1–2 business days, and payment typically follows 1–2 business days after the invoice is approved. Methods are bank wire, Visa Direct and Mastercard Send up to $20,000, Skrill up to $3,000, and crypto. Rise isn't on the list, and FTMO doesn't name which coins it pays in (withdrawal FAQ).

The 2-Step pays 80% of profit. It rises to 90% once you meet the Scaling Plan: four months as a funded trader, 10% net profit in that window and at least two paid rewards. The same plan grows the balance by 25% every four months, up to $2,000,000. Before scaling, total allocation is capped at $400,000 per trader.

FTMO pricing and hidden fees

The global 2-Step costs €89, €250, €345, €540 or €1,080 for $10K to $200K. The 1-Step costs €79, €199, €319, €499 or €999. On 8 October, the $100K 2-Step was on offer at €439 and the $100K 1-Step at €399.

  • Refund. The 2-Step fee comes back with your first reward. The 1-Step fee is never refunded.
  • Checkout surcharge. PayPal, Skrill and crypto add 3%. Cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Revolut Pay are free (payment methods).
  • Currency adjustment. Since the July 2026 terms, FTMO takes 0.7% of realised profit or loss when an instrument's profit currency differs from your account currency, such as GBPUSD on a EUR account (trading update).
  • Futures. $119, $169 or $229 a month on Growth, resets at $109 to $219, and a market data fee on Live funded accounts that FTMO doesn't publish.

Topstep

Topstep runs CME futures only, on its own TopstepX platform with Quantower as the alternative. NinjaTrader, Tradovate and Rithmic don't appear anywhere in its help center. You must be flat by 3:10 p.m. CT every day (products and hours).

Topstep rules

Trading Combine. $3,000, $6,000 or $9,000 profit targets for 50K, 100K and 150K. The Maximum Loss Limit is $2,000, $3,000 or $4,500, trails your end-of-day balance and locks at the starting balance. Topstep monitors it in real time, open trades included, and "makes no exceptions" (MLL).

The daily loss limit is optional. You choose it at checkout and can't change it later. Hitting it flattens you until 5 p.m. CT without failing the account (DLL).

Consistency. Your best day must stay at or below 55% of total profit, or the target rises to best day ÷ 0.55. In practice, two trading days is the fastest pass (consistency).

Express Funded Account. The balance starts at $0, and the loss floor sits at minus the drawdown amount. After your first payout, the floor moves to $0.

Topstep payout reality

You pick a payout path when you activate. Standard needs five winning days of $150 or more. Consistency needs three trading days with your best day at 40% or less of net profit. Each request can take 50% of the balance, capped at $2,000, $3,000 or $5,000 on Standard. Adding a daily loss limit at checkout doubles those caps under a "Limited Time" offer running since 2 June 2026 (payout policy).

The split is 90/10. The old 100% on the first $10,000 only applies to traders who joined the new dashboard before 12 January 2026. Internal approval adds 1–3 business days before the payment method's own time. Methods:

  • Aeropay, instant after approval for US banks that support real-time payments, no Topstep fee
  • Wise for Canada, the UK and China, 1–3 business days, no Topstep fee
  • ACH, 1–3 business days, $30
  • International wire, 5–10 business days, $30

The minimum payout is $125. No crypto, Rise or PayPal.

Topstep pricing and hidden fees

The Standard Combine costs $49, $99 or $199 a month, plus a $149 activation fee when you pass. The No Activation Fee path costs $95, $149 or $229 a month with nothing due on passing (pricing).

  • Resets cost the monthly price again and push the rebill date 30 days out. Each monthly rebill adds one free reset credit.
  • Level 2 data is $38 a month. Commissions come out of your balance on every fill: $3.78 per round turn on ES or NQ (fees).
  • Live traders pay $133 per exchange per month for professional CME data beyond the one exchange Topstep covers, plus their own platform licence (live costs).
  • Refund. A 14-day guarantee on your first Combine returns up to one monthly payment if you haven't passed.

FundedNext

FundedNext sells four CFD challenges (Stellar 2-Step, 1-Step, Lite and Instant) and three futures programs. It is registered in Comoros, says it operates under the UAE framework, and calls all trading simulated (regulation FAQ).

FundedNext rules

Stellar 2-Step. 8% target in Phase 1, 5% in Phase 2, at least 5 trading days per phase, no time limit. The daily loss limit is 5%, and the 10% max loss is static from the starting balance (2-Step). Stellar 1-Step. 10% target, 2 trading days minimum, 3% daily and a 6% static max loss.

FundedNext's pages disagree on how it measures the daily limit. The help center uses starting balance × 5%. The program page tooltip uses the previous day's closing balance. On the funded account, the fine print adds three things:

  • No more than 3% of starting balance at risk across open trades. The first breach costs the profit from those trades (risk limits).
  • Only 40% of the profit from trades opened within 5 minutes of high-impact news counts (news rule).
  • No expert advisors on accounts of $50,000 and above. One of its own rule articles says EAs aren't allowed at all, and the 2-Step page says they are. Ask support before running a bot.

Futures. Flex is one phase with a 40% consistency rule and an end-of-day trailing max loss of $1,500, $2,500 or $4,000 that locks at the starting balance plus $100. You must be flat by 3:10 p.m. CT.

FundedNext payout reality

On the 2-Step and Lite, you choose a payout option at checkout and can't change it (reward share):

  • Standard: first payout 21 days after your first funded trade, then every 14 days, at 80%
  • 3-Day: three profitable days of 1% or more, at 60%
  • On-Demand: any day once you're up 2% with no day above 40% of profit, at 90%

The 1-Step pays every 5 business days at 80%, cut from 90% for purchases from 12 January 2026. Methods are USDT on ERC20 or TRC20, USDC, RiseWorks, bank transfer from $1,000, card up to $3,000 and Confirmo (withdrawals).

FundedNext promises to process a payout within 24 hours or add $1,000, but its help center excludes bank transfers (24-hour promise). Futures accounts close after five payouts, and Flex withdrawals are capped at 50% of profit per request.

FundedNext pricing and hidden fees

The Stellar 2-Step costs $59.99 for $6K ($34.99 with code STOCT on 8 October), then $119.99, $199.99, $299.99, $549.99 and $1,099.99 up to $200K. The fee comes back with your first reward on the 2-Step and your third on the 1-Step and Lite (fee refund).

  • Payout fee. Up to 3.5% on every method, plus gateway charges (minimums and fees). On a $2,000 payout, that is up to $70.
  • Add-ons are priced as a share of the challenge fee. A 95% lifetime split adds 30% on the 2-Step, Double Up adds 40% and swap-free adds 10% (add-ons).
  • cTrader or Match-Trader adds a $25 platform fee, not refunded.
  • Refund window. 7 days, and only if you haven't placed a trade.
  • Futures fees are never refunded, and Flex prices differ between the product card, FAQ and help center. The card showed $69.99 for 50K with code FNFLEX against a $133.99 list price.

Its own pages show three different "total rewarded" figures today: $295.6M, $306.9M and $316.1M.

Apex Trader Funding

Apex replaced its whole product line on 1 March 2026. New evaluations are one-time purchases with 30 days of access, in Intraday Trail or EOD Trail versions, from 25K to 150K. It trades futures only, on Rithmic, Tradovate or WealthCharts.

Apex rules

The evaluation is one step with no minimum days. Hit $1,500, $3,000, $6,000 or $9,000 before day 30 without touching the drawdown of $1,000, $2,000, $3,000 or $4,000 (fees and access). The Intraday version trails your real-time peak, open profit included. The EOD version recalculates at 4:59:59 p.m. ET from the closing balance, and adds a daily loss limit of $1,000 on 50K that pauses trading for the day (EOD evaluations).

On the funded Performance Account:

  • A 50% consistency rule. Your largest profitable day must be under half of net profit since the last payout. It blocks the payout button instead of failing you (consistency).
  • A tiered daily loss limit that includes open losses.
  • Bots and algorithms banned, and a stop loss required on every trade (prohibited activities).
  • Two days with $50 or more net profit in every rolling 30 days, or the account closes (inactivity).

Apex payout reality

The split is 100%. Each payout needs five qualifying days: $200 or more on a 50K Intraday account, $250 on a 50K EOD. You also need a balance above the safety net, which is $52,100 on a 50K. The minimum request is $500.

Caps rise per payout. On a 50K Intraday they run $1,500, $2,000, $2,500, $2,500, $3,000 and $3,000, then the account closes (intraday payouts). That puts the lifetime ceiling at $14,500 on a 50K Intraday and $13,000 on a 50K EOD, whatever the account earns. You can hold 20 funded accounts at once.

US traders get ACH. Everyone else gets Plane to a local bank; Apex no longer uses Wise or Deel. Apex says "most users receive payouts within 5–11 business days total" (payout methods). The homepage promises "No Payout Denials", but a request is denied automatically if the balance drops below the minimum after you submit it (requesting a payout).

Apex pricing and hidden fees

List prices are $167, $249, $790 and $1,190 for Intraday, and $490, $590, $1,190 and $2,190 for EOD. Activation costs $89 to $159 on top. The code SAVENOW takes up to 92% off evaluations until 13 October 2026, but never applies to activation fees (coupon page).

  • No resets. A failed or expired evaluation is gone; you buy a new one.
  • No refunds of any kind, activation fees included (refund policy).
  • Cards only. Visa, Mastercard or Discover in your own name. No Amex or crypto.
  • Commissions come out of the simulated balance. They are $1.99 per side on ES or NQ through Rithmic, $1.55 through Tradovate (Rithmic commissions).
  • Professional data. If you register as a professional trader, CME data costs at least $115 a month.

How Prop Firms Actually Make Money (And Why 90% Fail the Challenge)

Prop firms sell evaluations. Your challenge fee is revenue, and a funded payout is a cost. All four say so. FTMO provides "demo accounts with fictitious funds" (disclosure), and Apex calls its funded account a "Simulated Funded (Sim Funded) account" (PA rules).

How many fail depends on what you count. Per attempt, the firms that publish data show 83% to 93% failing:

SourcePassedFailedCounted as
Topstep, 202516.8%83.2%Combines started (disclosures)
FPFX data, 2024, 10 unnamed firms12%88%About 300,000 accounts (Finance Magnates)
Earn2Trade, 20258.89%91.11%Subscriptions (Earn2Trade)
FunderPro, since launch7.35%92.65%Challenge buyers (FunderPro)

So "90% fail" is about right for attempts. It's wrong for people. Traders buy again after a fail, and Topstep says 51.8% of its 2025 participants reached a funded account at least once. FTMO, FundedNext and Apex publish no current pass rate.

Passing isn't getting paid. Topstep says 33.3% of its funded traders received a payout in 2025, and 0.71% of Express traders were moved to a live account. Multiply its two people-rates and about 17 in 100 people who started a Combine got paid. That's my arithmetic. Topstep doesn't publish it.

Fees fund most of it. None of the four discloses what share of revenue comes from fees. FTMO's filings come closest. Rewards tied to 2024 sales ran 82% above the reserve it had set aside, and net profit fell to CZK 782 million on CZK 8.81 billion of 2025 revenue (CzechCrunch). Returning clients made up close to 80% of its revenue (Finance Magnates).

The CFTC alleged in 2023 that My Forex Funds took about $310 million in fees and paid out about $137 million (complaint). Those claims were never tried. In May 2025, a court dismissed the case with prejudice because the CFTC had made false statements in bad faith (Reuters).

Most accounts die on one bad day. The only firm-level breakdown I found, from The Funded Trader for August to October 2023, put 71% of failures on the daily drawdown and 29% on the max drawdown (stats). Topstep's own tip says "Over 63% of traders have lost account in a single day."

What helps:

  • Size against the daily limit, not the target. On FTMO's 1-Step, 3% of a $100K account is $3,000. If your stop loses $1,000, three losing trades end the day.
  • Prefer static or end-of-day floors if you let trades breathe. Intraday trailing punishes a winner that comes back.
  • Track the limits outside the platform. I helped build Rize Trade, a trading journal whose tracker follows prop-firm daily loss, position size and drawdown rules on demo accounts.

Payout reality covers the time to first payout, the methods, fees, caps and stated processing time. Rule fairness covers the drawdown type, daily limits, consistency rules and traps such as FundedNext's news rule or Apex's six-payout cap. Cost is the fee test above, plus refunds. Disclosure rewards published pass and payout data, and costs points for official pages that contradict each other. Topstep is the only one with a full 2025 funnel. FundedNext and Apex lose points for conflicting rules and figures on their own sites.

I read each firm's pricing data, help center and terms on 8 October 2026, and recorded quotes, URLs and contradictions in a fact sheet per firm. I didn't buy or trade any challenge, so none of the payout times above is measured. They are what each firm publishes.

Prop firm FAQ

Is a prop firm account real money?

Not until a firm moves you to live. FTMO, FundedNext, Apex and Topstep all run evaluations and funded accounts on simulated balances. Topstep moved 0.71% of its Express traders to a live account in 2025. Apex's live program turns your simulated balance into a "Bonus Vault" that it says is "not real money" (live FAQ).

Which prop firm pays out fastest?

FundedNext publishes the shortest approval time, a 4.74-hour median, and a 24-hour promise outside bank transfers. Topstep's Aeropay is instant for US traders once approval clears in 1–3 business days. FTMO states 1–2 business days of review plus 1–2 for payment. Apex says 5–11 business days. None of these is a measured result.

What is the difference between trailing and end-of-day drawdown?

Intraday trailing raises the loss floor on every new high, open profit included. End-of-day trailing raises it once a day from the closing balance. Static never moves it. See the drawdown diagram.

Can I use a VPN with a prop firm?

No. Apex and Topstep ban VPNs and proxies outright, and FundedNext terminates MT4 and MT5 accounts after a second US IP address. Trade from the country on your account.

Do prop firms refund the challenge fee?

FTMO refunds the 2-Step fee with your first reward. FundedNext refunds it with the first reward on the 2-Step and the third on the 1-Step and Lite. Topstep refunds up to one monthly payment within 14 days of your first Combine if you haven't passed. Apex refunds nothing.
